   Paul BRUNNER
Painter, cultural actor, exhibition curator, Paul Brunner is also a planetary traveller. After his academic studies in Geneva, he undertakes a long-time journey to China, is conquerred by Chinese calligraphy, and tries to learn it after his return in Switzerland.

With a sharp eye, the attention at its utmost level and an exacerbate sensitiveness, Paul Brunner is inquiring. His paintings oscillate between Orient and West, impregnated on one side by the precepts of the old masters, on the other by non figurative expressions in connection with lyric abstraction. His way of expressing is swinging between color field painting and black ink.

The current works of Paul Brunner swarm with elements : painted, erased, underlined, oriented, calligraphic, in series entitled Traces, Passages, Mobile-Immobile, Rive-Dérive or Transfiguration. They allow him to envisage different view points, angles of reflection, attitudes, in his research and his questioning the world.

In a subtle game of criss-crossing of black ink and colours, sometimes nearly erased for the ink, and skillfully shaded for the colours, with effects of transparency or materiality, the experienced eye of the artist analyses tirelessly his subjects, leading sometimes to unforseeable paths.

The richness of the painted fields solicites the glance of the spectator who is driven from pillar to post, like snaped up by the discovery, casting one’s eye with avidity over dense however fluid painted zones, with coats and tints cleverly orchestrated. Marked by an asserted gesture of the brush and signs evoking Chinese calligraphy, the reading inherent to each canevas, sometimes enigmatic, fascinates and hoodoos. Sometimes it shakes, like for example in the series Transfiguration, where the individual, portrayed, is maltreated, hurt in his expression, like an
echo of the confusing period we are going through.

In order to mark this event, a marvellous publication accompanies the show, illustrating most of the exhibited paintings.
An original, strong, poetic and contrasted work, an exhibition not to be missed !
